2 Films and some Grid Computing by risa
Hey all- a great set of films coming up on Monday night prompted me to remember another awesome and environmentally aware project. Remember SETI, and the coolness of collaborating via interweb, and contributing distributed computing power to help send communications into space? Climateprediction.net takes that computing principle and turns the focus toward home. You can watch your own version of the planet and the changes that may be coming unfold, and help scientists test their prediction models for climate change all at the same time. So there’s that. OIL, NATURE AND PROFIT
Two special film screenings followed by a discussion with Nick Gelleti (Rights and Democracy) and others on Monday, February 27th at Concordia University.
These two one-hour docs explore the intersection between resource, nature, and big business. BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND THE ROOSTER’S CROW won best Canadian documentary at Hot Docs Film Festival 2005 as well as taking the Audience Best price at Rencontres Internationales du Documentaire de Montreal 2005. The film interrogates the actions of a Canadian oil company displacing people and destroying the environment in Ecuador. OIL ON ICE examines the environmental destruction of the Arctic when Canadian and American governments get together with the oil companies to build a pipeline through pristine wilderness.
The event is free and is part of the ongoing Cinema Politica film series.
