down then back up and much chaos in between but still loving it  by risa

Hallo Open Lovers!

We’d like to apologize for our brief downtime (server madness) and for the disturbing quiet that surrounded it. You can read a bit about what we’ve been up to over on the Indyish blog, but I’ll say this here- work as a taxomony consultant is somewhat interesting but the amount it takes me away from the bloggier things i love is well nigh unacceptable.

El and I were laughing at ourselves the other day, because in the past year we realized we’ve both sort of turned down full time, somewhat cushy but uninteresting jobs in order to continue hanging out on this broke-and-in-debt-but-freewheeling-edge here. Neither of us can seem to give up the time and brain space it takes to try and be good at what we love. Maybe this is selfish. It is almost certainly impractical. Nevertheless, we can’t seem to help it, and I like to try and reassure myself about the relative sensibility, or at least philosophical worth, of my life choices with the words of great old guys like Charles Taylor, who insist that the pursuit of “authenticity” or authentic happiness, though it seems to often spiral away towards self-absorbtion and greed- can also orient the self toward activities that are mutually beneficial, because individual happiness is so perfectly tangled up with the happiness of others. so that’s what i’m hopin.

anyway. no more apologies for periods of quiet on open- that’s part of it’s purpose: to experiment with the kind of unbound experience of time that the computer network of the web allows. to just keep coming in and out of this theory head-space when we are inspired and able, to give it love like a plant or terrarium, and to still have it all here carrying on when we get back. Hundreds of small conversations slowly sprouting and other poetic things like that. Anyone interested in participating in a regularish way in this conversation, let me know here in comments or by email. We’d love to continue to open this love fest up more.

note: you don’t have to be in montreal to write for open journal montreal. I am looking for a few people to talk with, is all, and while you’re here it’s like you’re over at our place in Montreal. I would particularly love to find and welcome a french language theory blogger, though. the best thing about montreal is when conversations happen in multiple languages at once with quick switches and happy comprehension, or when stories from the world stitch over each other with a like-minded-kindness, and joie de vivre. when you’re here, you don’t notice how often you grab a french word for an english one. We even say them with overly jokey english accents sometimes, until they became regularlized repronuciations of the word- guichet, depanneur, querbes (which, post anglo massacre, sounds like it has something to do with killer bees. querbes. killer bees. it’s just a street, really.) Lanuague is interesting, is all I’m saying, and I love to find someone who would be interested in maybe contributing thoughts about that to our exchange from the other side of this province’s language divide.

J’aimerais trouver un(e) ecrivain(e) francais(e), bilingue semi-regulier pour nous joindre a construire les dialogues diverses sur “Open Journal Montreal”. Interesser? Envoyer moi un courriel au:

ou reponder ici dans les commentaires.
