PRESS RELEASE…

For Immediate Release

The Québec-vert-Kyoto Coalition launches CAMÉRA VERTE/GREEN CAMERA, a national
and international short film competition giving filmmakers a unique opportunity to express views on the problems of climate change.

MONTREAL, September 21, 2005 – Filmmakers, grab your cameras!

As part of its preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference, which takes place in Montreal in late November, the Québec-vert-Kyoto Coalition of environmental groups is proud to announce the launch of Caméra verte/Green Camera, a national and international competition of short films.

Many organisations linked to cinema and television are partners of the event, which will conclude with a mini film festival during the Rendez-vous Citoyen Kyoto 2005 on November 25th and 26th in Montreal.

For documentary filmmaker Magnus Isacsson, who chairs the competition, this is a golden opportunity for emerging filmmakers to challenge their senior colleagues.

“Young people are used to making films quickly and this is the chance of a lifetime to apply their skills to a topic that couldn’t be more pressing, and that will become even more as we move towards COP 11.”

According to Patrick Bonin, spokesman for the Coalition, “The competition gives artists the opportunity to express their views on one of the most important environmental problems of our era.” André Bélisle, president of the environmental group AQLPA, invites filmmakers “to participate in their own way as part of the wider efforts of citizen mobilisation, so that together we halt the growing threat: the warming of our planet.”

The jury for the awards includes several respected local personalities including Oscar-winning animation filmmaker Frédéric Back and popular environmentalist Laure Waridel, author and founder of Équiterre.

Films will be accepted until November 14th 2005.

Awards and honourable mentions are sponsored by organisations such the Parole citoyenne (an Internet initiative by the National Film Board of Canada), the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema of Concordia University, and the Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montreal.

Several selected entries will be screened at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois and a selection of the best short films will be screened at Terrascope, the film festival on sustainable development and environment.

Films submitted from foreign countries are eligible only for the “Award for Best Foreign Short Film.”

    Dear Jagdish Kulkanri,

Thank you for finding our site and expressing interest in this contest. We may not be the best people to contact about future Green Camera projects, though, as we were simply re:posting. I think you should email info@cameraverte.ca – I’m sure they would be happy to hear of your interest and to keep you informed of future developments.

Your series sounds fascinating though and I’d love to see it. I also run a site called Indyish.com where a network of independent artists can co-author the site, AND put things they make up for sale.

I am also actually in the process of organizing a kind of film contest that’s taking place this weekend, and if you are interested I’d like to invite you to join in. Participants will be given a song from Telefauna, Shoot the Moon or Sara Johnston- three great local Montreal bands, and then the filmmakers will have 24 hours to edit their footage, or shoot new footage and edit that, into a video that works with the song. The invitation to participate is here:
    http://www.indyish.com/music-video-in-a-day-ticket/

If you reserve a spot, we’ll email you a song and you can work with it there, and then send your video back to our attention using http://www.jumpcut.com/ or another web video place of your choice. Elran, my partner, wrote a post about this here:
    http://www.indyish.com/jumpcut-web-based-video-editing-for-the-masses/

Anyway, thanks Jagdish, I look forward to hearing from you again,
    Keep well!
    Risa
